About music therapy

Moment Of Joy case study image of Paul

The later stages of dementia can be an isolating and confusing time, which leave people unable to communicate. Music therapy aims to stimulate cognition, helping to reduce symptoms associated with advanced dementia such as anxiety and depression, and bringing peace, fulfilment and meaning.

At MHA, we adapt music therapy sessions to suit the individual, nurturing their physical and emotional wellbeing, enhancing the quality of later life and allowing residents to reconnect with their lives.

In 2008 we were the first care provider to offer music therapy to people living with dementia in a care setting. Today, we’re one of the biggest employers of music therapists in the UK. Without vital support from people like you, MHA would not be able to provide this life-enhancing service.

We’ve seen first-hand how music therapy can unlock special memories and help residents express emotions and feelings. Through the unique interaction of almost 11,000 music therapy sessions each year, our award-winning therapists have reduced the isolation and symptoms of dementia for many of our residents. The sessions also help our staff to continue enhancing the quality of later life.

Through almost 11,000 music therapy sessions a year, MHA therapists have reduced the isolation and symptoms of people living with dementia.

Specialist support

Our music therapy team offer daily sessions in 65 homes providing dementia care. They are practised musicians who have a two-year postgraduate qualification in music therapy. This, and their regular training (required by the Health Care Professions Council) helps them understand the psychological factors that shape the experience of a person living in the later stages of dementia.

Donate today to make sure more people can benefit from MHA music therapy.
